Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the part of a chloroplast where each of these happens or is found. (a) The enzymes that build sugar. (b) Chlorophyll. (c) The space inside one thylakoid. (d) The flat membranes that join one granum to the next. (e) Which of (a) to (d) belong to the light reactions?
A chloroplast has an outer and an inner membrane, the stroma, thylakoids stacked as grana, stroma lamellae joining the grana, and the lumen inside each thylakoid. Chlorophyll and the light reactions are in the thylakoid membranes (ATP and NADPH are made there). The enzymes of the biosynthetic phase are in the stroma. Chloroplasts lie mainly in the mesophyll cells.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The sugar enzymes. They work in the stroma.
Step 2. Chlorophyll. It sits in the thylakoid membranes.
Step 3. The space inside a thylakoid. It is the lumen.
Step 4. The connecting membranes. They are the stroma lamellae.
Step 5. The light reactions. They take place in the thylakoid membranes, so item (b) is part of the light reactions. The stroma enzymes in (a) belong to the biosynthetic phase.
Answer: (a) stroma; (b) thylakoid membrane; (c) lumen; (d) stroma lamellae; (e) (b).
