Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the kind of isomerism between each pair: (a) butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol; (b) butan-1-ol and ethoxyethane; (c) pentane and 2,2-dimethylpropane; (d) ethoxyethane and methoxypropane; (e) propanone, , and propanal; (f) propanone and , which are in quick balance.
Isomers have the same molecular formula and different structures. Structural: chain, position, functional group, metamerism, tautomerism. Stereo: geometrical (each end of a double bond has two different groups) and optical (a carbon with four different groups). Degrees of unsaturation: . Up to stereoisomers for n different stereocentres.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a). The same skeleton and the same group, but OH on a different carbon. Position isomerism.
Step 2. (b). An alcohol and an ether. Functional group isomerism.
Step 3. (c). A different carbon skeleton. Chain isomerism.
Step 4. (d). Both are ethers, with different alkyl groups on each side of the oxygen. Metamerism.
Step 5. (e). A ketone and an aldehyde. Functional group isomerism.
Step 6. (f). A keto form and an enol form that change into each other quickly by the move of a hydrogen atom. Tautomerism.
Answer: position, functional group, chain, metamerism, functional group, tautomerism.
