Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Give the name of each compound.
Stem for the carbons in the chain: meth 1, eth 2, prop 3, but 4, pent 5, hex 6. Ending for the group: -ane, -ene, -yne, -ol (alcohol, ), -al (aldehyde, ), -one (ketone, C=O inside), -oic acid (). Prefix for a halogen: chloro, bromo.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Two carbons and a bromine: bromoethane.
Step 2. (b) One carbon with the group: methanal.
Step 3. (c) Five carbons ending in : pentanal.
Step 4. (d) Five carbons with C=O inside the chain: pentanone.
Step 5. (e) Three carbons with a triple bond: propyne.
Answer: (a) bromoethane; (b) methanal; (c) pentanal; (d) pentanone; (e) propyne.
