A seed splits into two halves. The leaves of the plant have a net of veins, and there is one main root with side roots. Is the plant a monocot or a dicot? Name one plant of each kind.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Thallophyta: no root, stem or leaf. Bryophyta: no vascular tissue. Pteridophyta: vascular tissue, spores, no seeds. Gymnosperms: naked seeds. Angiosperms: seeds in fruits; monocots have one cotyledon, dicots two.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The seed. Two halves means two cotyledons.
Step 2. Leaf and root. A net of veins and a tap root agree.
Step 3. Examples. Dicot: gram or mustard. Monocot: rice or maize.
Answer: a dicot; for example, gram (dicot) and rice (monocot).
