Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Four elements have these electron arrangements: 2, 3; 2, 8, 6; 2, 1; and 2, 8, 4. Find the period and the group of each, and say whether it is a metal, a non-metal or a metalloid.
Across a period atoms get smaller, because more protons pull the same shells in. Down a group they get bigger, because a shell is added. Metallic character, the tendency to lose electrons, falls across a period and rises down a group.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. 2, 3. Period 2, group 13: boron, a metalloid.
Step 2. 2, 8, 6. Period 3, group 16: sulphur, a non-metal.
Step 3. 2, 1. Period 2, group 1: lithium, a metal.
Step 4. 2, 8, 4. Period 3, group 14: silicon, a metalloid.
Answer: boron metalloid; sulphur non-metal; lithium metal; silicon metalloid.
