Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Let , and be real numbers with and , and put . The expression is cyclic: it keeps its value when the letters are moved round in a cycle, from to . But it is not symmetric, because swapping only two of the letters can change its value. So the usual first guess, that the greatest value comes when , needs care here. This problem finds the true greatest value of and every triple that gives it.
Count two triples as different when they differ in at least one place, so and are different triples. Write out every step of each proof, and do not assume where the greatest value is.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. Compare with when is the middle value, and bound by AM-GM. A cyclic shift then covers every case.
(a) .
(b) With we have and . By AM-GM on the three numbers , , , whose sum is : , with equality when , that is , . So the greatest value is , which is larger than the value at the equal point.
(c) Expand: . This factorises as . If lies between and , then and are both at most or both at least , so their product is at least , and . Hence . Next, by AM-GM on , , , whose sum is : .
(d) Of any three numbers, one lies between the other two. A cyclic shift of the letters, once or twice, moves that number into the middle place without changing or . So always, and . For we need and equality in (c) after the shift: , and . Since , one of , is . If then , giving . If then , but then , not . So, after the shift, only works. Undoing the shift gives the triples , and : there are of them. Each gives , for example for the first.
(e) By (d), , with equality exactly when, after the shift, , and . Now need not be . If we get . If then and . If then and . So, after the shift, the triples are and . Undoing the shift gives , , and : the greatest value of is , taken at triples. At , .
Check. On a grid of all triples with steps of , the greatest values of and are both , at exactly the triples above, and fifty thousand random triples never give above .
