Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A mixture has iron filings, sand and common salt.
A separation uses a difference in a property. Filtration: a solid that does not dissolve. Evaporation: a dissolved solid. Separating funnel: liquids that do not mix. Centrifuge: tiny particles. Sublimation: a solid that sublimes. A magnet: iron.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) A magnet. It pulls out the iron filings, because iron is magnetic.
Step 2. Dissolve and filter. Stir the rest in water: the salt dissolves, but the sand does not. Filtering keeps the sand on the paper.
Step 3. Evaporate. Evaporate the filtrate: the salt is left behind.
Step 4. (b) The salt. , which is .
Answer: Magnet, then dissolve and filter, then evaporate; of salt, .
