A sunflower seedling has a stem 3.0 mm thick…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

A sunflower seedling has a stem 3.03.03.0 mm thick. In one day, light from one side makes its shaded side grow 8.48.48.4 mm while its lit side grows 6.06.06.0 mm. By how many radians does the stem bend? About how many degrees is that?

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

radians

When one side of a stem grows more than the other, the stem bends. The angle of the bend, in radians, is the extra length of the faster side divided by the thickness of the stem. One radian is about 575757 degrees.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. Extra length. 8.4−6.0=2.48.4 - 6.0 = 2.48.4−6.0=2.4 mm.

Step 2. The bend in radians. 2.4 mm3.0 mm=0.8\dfrac{2.4\ \text{mm}}{3.0\ \text{mm}} = 0.83.0 mm2.4 mm=0.8 radians.

Step 3. In degrees. 0.8×57.3≈460.8 \times 57.3 \approx 460.8×57.3≈46 degrees.

Answer: 0.80.80.8 radians, about 464646 degrees, towards the light.
