Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Here are six names: Brassica juncea (mustard), Brassica oleracea (cabbage), Allium cepa (onion), Allium sativum (garlic), Vigna radiata (mung bean) and Cicer arietinum (chickpea). Which pairs are in the same genus? How many genera are there?
Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus): two Latin words, the genus and the specific epithet. In print both are in italics; by hand each word is underlined separately. The genus starts with a capital letter, the epithet with a small one, and the author comes last in short form, for example Linn. Plants follow the ICN, and animals the ICZN.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Same genus. Mustard and cabbage share Brassica. Onion and garlic share Allium.
Step 2. Count. Brassica, Allium, Vigna and Cicer: genera.
Answer: the two Brassica and the two Allium species are pairs; genera in all.
