Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Eighteen runners finished a race in these times, in seconds:
12.4, 13.1, 14.8, 15.0, 15.6, 16.2, 16.9, 17.3, 17.8, 18.1, 18.5, 19.0, 19.4, 20.2, 21.7, 22.5, 23.9, 26.1
Put them in groups of 5 s, starting at 10 s. Each group runs from its first value up to, but not including, the next one: 10 s up to 15 s, and so on. Count the runners in each group.
A histogram shows numbers put in groups of equal width. The bars touch, and the height of a bar is the number of values in its group. A line graph joins values over time.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. 10 s up to 15 s. 12.4, 13.1 and 14.8: runners.
Step 2. 15 s up to 20 s. 15.0 is the start of this group, so it belongs here. From 15.0 to 19.4 there are runners.
Step 3. 20 s up to 25 s. 20.2, 21.7, 22.5 and 23.9: runners.
Step 4. 25 s up to 30 s. 26.1: runner.
Check. .
Answer: 3, 10, 4 and 1 runners.
