Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Give the oxidation number of the metal in each compound, and write the name with its Stock number: (a) ; (b) ; (c) ; (d) .
Oxidation numbers: free element 0; simple ion its charge; F is -1; H is +1 (in metal hydrides -1); O is -2 (peroxides -1, superoxides -1/2, in OF2 +2); alkali metals +1, alkaline earth metals +2. The numbers add up to the charge of the species. A rise is oxidation, a fall is reduction.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a). , so : iron(III) chloride.
Step 2. (b). , so : copper(I) oxide.
Step 3. (c). , so : manganese(IV) oxide.
Step 4. (d). , so : tin(II) chloride.
Answer: , , and , named iron(III) chloride, copper(I) oxide, manganese(IV) oxide and tin(II) chloride.
