Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Give the class number of the enzyme that does each job. (a) Removes hydrogen from a substrate. (b) Moves a phosphate group to another molecule. (c) Splits a bond by adding water. (d) Removes a group and leaves a double bond. (e) Rearranges the atoms inside a molecule. (f) Joins two molecules using ATP.
Six classes: oxidoreductases (hydrogen, oxidation and reduction), transferases (another group), hydrolases (water), lyases (other breaking, double bond left), isomerases (rearranging), ligases (joining, with ATP). Apoenzyme + cofactor = holoenzyme. Cofactors: prosthetic group (tight, haem), coenzyme (loose, NAD from niacin), metal ion (zinc).
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, compare your working with the solution.
Step 1. Match each job to a class. (a) Oxidoreductase, class . (b) Transferase, class . (c) Hydrolase, class . (d) Lyase, class . (e) Isomerase, class . (f) Ligase, class .
Answer: (a) , (b) , (c) , (d) , (e) , (f) .
