Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

Give the atomicity of each, and say whether it is monatomic, diatomic, triatomic or has more atoms.

  1. Argon, Ar\text{Ar}Ar
  2. Chlorine, Cl2\text{Cl}_2Cl2
  3. Carbon dioxide, CO2\text{CO}_2CO2
  4. White phosphorus, P4\text{P}_4P4
  5. Ethane, C2H6\text{C}_2\text{H}_6C2H6
Need a reminder? The key ideaShowHide

A molecule is a group of atoms joined together. Its atomicity is the number of atoms in it. A small number after a symbol counts atoms in one molecule; a number in front counts molecules; a number after a bracket multiplies everything inside.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. (a) Argon: 111, monatomic. (b) Chlorine: 222, diatomic. (c) Carbon dioxide: 333, triatomic.

Step 2. (d) White phosphorus: 444. (e) Ethane: 2+6=82 + 6 = 82+6=8.

Answer: 111, 222, 333, 444 and 888.
