Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Germinating seeds are kept in two closed tubes. Tube 1 has a cup of KOH. Tube 2 has a cup of water. After an hour, the gas volume has fallen by mL in tube 1 and by mL in tube 2.
. It is for carbohydrate, about for protein, for fat, and above for organic acids. KOH takes in carbon dioxide, so the fall of volume in a tube with KOH is the oxygen taken in.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Given. Fall in tube 1: mL. Fall in tube 2: mL.
Plan. Tube 1 gives the oxygen. Tube 2 gives the difference.
Step 1. Oxygen. The KOH removes the carbon dioxide, so the oxygen is mL.
Step 2. Carbon dioxide. In tube 2, mL, so mL.
Step 3. RQ. .
Answer: mL; mL; .
Check. The RQ is below , so the substrate is mostly fat or protein.
