Riya eats a sandwich of bread (mostly starch), paneer (mostly protein) and butter (mostly fat). For each food, say where its digestion starts, which juices act on it, and what it becomes in the end.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Saliva (salivary amylase): starch to sugar. Stomach: hydrochloric acid, pepsin for proteins, mucus. Small intestine: bile emulsifies fats and makes the food alkaline; pancreatic juice has trypsin and lipase; intestinal juice gives amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids with glycerol. Villi absorb the food; the large intestine takes back water.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Bread (starch). Starts in the mouth: salivary amylase makes sugar. Intestinal juice finishes it in the small intestine: glucose.
Step 2. Paneer (protein). Starts in the stomach: pepsin, helped by hydrochloric acid. Trypsin from the pancreas and intestinal juice finish it: amino acids.
Step 3. Butter (fat). Starts in the small intestine. Bile breaks it into tiny drops, lipase acts on them, and intestinal juice finishes it: fatty acids and glycerol.
Answer: starch from the mouth to glucose; protein from the stomach to amino acids; fat from the small intestine to fatty acids and glycerol.
