Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Describe what happens when sodium () reacts with chlorine (). Give the ions, their arrangements, and the formula of the compound.
A metal atom loses its outer electrons to become a positive ion; a non-metal atom gains electrons to complete eight. The ions attract in an ionic bond, and the charges in the formula cancel. Ionic compounds are hard, brittle crystals with high melting points; they dissolve in water and conduct only when melted or dissolved.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Sodium gives its one outer electron to chlorine.
Step 2. : , like neon. : , like argon.
Step 3. The ions attract, forming NaCl.
Answer: as above.
