Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A jogger starts at one corner of a rectangular field long and wide. She jogs along the length, then along the width, to the opposite corner. Find the distance she covers and her displacement.
Distance is the length of the whole path; it has no direction and never decreases. Displacement is the straight line from start to end, with a direction. On a straight road use signs; for a right-angle turn, displacement .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Distance. .
Step 2. Displacement. , along the diagonal.
Answer: ; .
Check. The diagonal is shorter than going round two sides, as it must be.
