Each of these is written wrongly. Say what is wrong, and write it correctly: (a) azadirachta indica, (b) Ficus Religiosa, (c) Oryza for rice, (d) Allium cepa written by hand in a notebook, with one line drawn under both words together.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus): two Latin words, the genus and the specific epithet. In print both are in italics; by hand each word is underlined separately. The genus starts with a capital letter, the epithet with a small one, and the author comes last in short form, for example Linn. Plants follow the ICN, and animals the ICZN.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
(a) The genus needs a capital letter: Azadirachta indica.
(b) The epithet needs a small letter: Ficus religiosa.
(c) One word is only the genus; the species needs both: Oryza sativa.
(d) By hand, each word is underlined separately: Allium and cepa each get their own line.
