Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Barium reacts quickly with cold water, while magnesium hardly reacts with it. Write the equation for barium and water. Why does barium react more easily than magnesium, though both are in group 2?
Group 1 metals are soft, have one outer electron and react with water to give hydrogen and an alkali; reactivity rises down the group. Group 2 metals are harder and less reactive. Halogens, group 17, get darker and less reactive down the group, and a more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive one. Noble gases have full shells.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Equation. .
Step 2. Reason. Barium is far lower in the group. Its outer electrons are farther from the nucleus and shielded by more shells, so they are lost easily.
Answer: as in step 1; barium loses its outer electrons more easily.
