Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A bacterium and a white blood cell of a human are both single cells. Name two things that the white blood cell has and the bacterium does not. Name one thing that the bacterium has and the white blood cell does not.
Bacteria are the sole members of kingdom Monera. A bacterial cell has no nuclear membrane and no membrane-bound organelles, and its wall is not of cellulose. By shape bacteria are coccus (round), bacillus (rod), vibrio (comma) or spirillum (spiral). They divide mostly by binary fission, so after divisions one cell becomes . Archaebacteria (halophiles, thermoacidophiles, methanogens) live in extreme places because of a different cell wall.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. A nucleus. The white blood cell has a nucleus with a nuclear membrane. In the bacterium the genetic material lies free in the cell.
Step 2. Organelles. The white blood cell has membrane-bound organelles, such as mitochondria. The bacterium has none.
Step 3. The wall. The bacterium has a cell wall, not of cellulose. An animal cell has no cell wall.
Answer: the white blood cell has a nuclear membrane and membrane-bound organelles; the bacterium has a cell wall.
