Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Answer, and give a reason.
During a change of state the temperature stays steady and : ice melting , water boiling . The same heat comes out on freezing or condensing.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Every kilogram of water must give out to freeze, and the ice on top slows the loss of heat.
Step 2. (b) As the water on the fruit freezes it gives out its latent heat, which keeps the fruit near instead of colder.
Step 3. (c) The ice must take in its latent heat to melt before it warms at all: far more than cold water can take in.
Answer: Latent heat in each case.
Watch out. Freezing gives out heat; melting takes it in.
