Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
An oxygen molecule of mass kg moves along x at m/s between two walls m apart. It bounces elastically and never hits another molecule. Find the time between two hits on the same wall, and the number of hits on that wall each second. Then find the momentum it gives the wall in one hit, and the average force on the wall.
A molecule bouncing off a wall gives it the momentum in each hit, and hits it times each second. For a gas:
where is the total translational kinetic energy.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Given. kg, m/s, m.
Step 1. Time between hits. s.
Step 2. Hits each second. hits each second.
Step 3. Momentum per hit. kg m/s.
Step 4. Force. N.
Check. The same from N.
Answer: s, hits each second, kg m/s and N. A tiny force: a real wall feels the hits of about molecules at once.
