Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Alpha particles hit a gold nucleus head-on, at the same energy each time. (a) The energy of the alpha particles is doubled. By what factor does the closest approach change? (b) The target is changed from gold, , to aluminium, , at the first energy. By what factor does the closest approach change?
In a head-on hit the alpha particle stops where its kinetic energy has become electric potential energy. With in MeV and :
A nucleus with mass number has a radius of about fm.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Rule. , so is proportional to .
(a) Doubled energy. becomes , so becomes . The factor is .
(b) Aluminium. falls from 79 to 13. The factor is .
What if? A lighter nucleus lets the alpha particle come much closer, with the same energy. That is why light nuclei were later used to reach the nucleus.
