A teacher gives Jasmin three slides. Slide X has bundles in a ring, each with a patch of sclerenchyma above its phloem. Slide Y has a large central pith, radial bundles and an endodermis, with many strands of xylem. Slide Z has many bundles scattered in ground tissue, each with a water-containing cavity. (a) Name the part and the class of plant for each slide. (b) Which slide could still grow thicker with the help of cambium? (c) Which slide would have root hairs on its outer surface?

Dicot root: epidermis with root hairs, cortex, endodermis with Casparian strips of suberin, pericycle (lateral roots), radial bundles with two to four xylem strands (tetrarch), conjunctive tissue, small pith. Monocot root: same plan, more than six xylem strands (polyarch), large pith, no secondary growth. Dicot stem: epidermis with cuticle and trichomes, collenchymatous hypodermis, parenchymatous cortex, starch sheath endodermis, sclerenchymatous pericycle patches, medullary rays, a ring of conjoint open endarch bundles, a large pith. Monocot stem: sclerenchymatous hypodermis, ground tissue with no pith, scattered conjoint closed bundles with sheaths, smaller bundles near the edge, water-containing cavities.

Step 2. Slide Y. Radial bundles, many xylem strands and a large pith make a monocot root.
Step 3. Slide Z. Scattered closed bundles with water cavities make a monocot stem.
Step 4. Growth. Only slide X has open bundles with cambium, so only it can grow thicker.
Step 5. Root hairs. Slide Y is a root, so its epidermis would carry root hairs.
