Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A straight road runs east along the -axis of a map. Distances are in kilometres. A river wanders across the road. At kilometres east of the town, the river is kilometres north of the road, where a negative value means south of the road. Between and , find the value of , and find the total area enclosed between the river and the road.
The integral gives a signed area. For the total area, find the zeros of inside the interval, integrate over each piece and add the absolute values of the results.

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The crossings. is zero at and . Both lie inside .
Step 2. The antiderivative. . Then , , and .
Step 3. The integral. square kilometres.
Step 4. The pieces. From to the value is . From to it is , below the road. From to it is .
Step 5. The total. square kilometres.
Answer: the integral is about square kilometres and the total area is about square kilometres. The integral is smaller because the piece south of the road was subtracted.
