Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Some books write photosynthesis as .
The balanced equation is . A balanced equation has the same number of atoms of each element on both sides. The oxygen given out comes from water.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Left side. oxygen atoms.
Step 2. Right side. Glucose has , and has : oxygen atoms. Carbon ( and ) and hydrogen ( and ) also match, so the short equation is balanced.
Step 3. Why 12 waters. All the oxygen given out comes from water. Six molecules need oxygen atoms, so water molecules must be split. Some new water is made again, so appear on the right. The longer equation shows where the oxygen really comes from.
Answer: oxygen atoms on each side, so it is balanced; the longer form shows that the oxygen comes from split water molecules.
