Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A seedling's root tip is measured under a lens. The lengths of its four regions, from the tip upwards, are in the table.
| Region | Length |
|---|---|
| root cap | mm |
| region of meristematic activity | mm |
| region of elongation | mm |
| region of maturation | mm |
The region of maturation carries root hairs in every millimetre.
A tap root system has a primary root from the radicle, with lateral roots (dicots). A fibrous root system has many thin roots from the base of the stem (monocots). Adventitious roots grow from parts other than the radicle. A root tip has the root cap, the region of meristematic activity, the region of elongation and the region of maturation with root hairs. Roots change for storage (carrot, turnip, radish, sweet potato), support (prop roots of banyan, stilt roots of maize and sugarcane) and breathing (pneumatophores of Rhizophora).
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
