Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A sealed steel box holds mol of argon at K. Argon atoms do not spin, so all their energy is translational kinetic energy. Find this energy. The box is then heated to K. By how much does the energy rise?
Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of the molecules:
with J/K, J/(mol K) and in kelvin.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. At 400 K. J.
Step 2. At 600 K. J.
Step 3. Rise. J. The same from J.
Answer: J at K; it rises by J.
What if? The box is rigid, so the gas does no work. All the heat given to it goes into this rise. That is the start of the specific heat of a gas, in the next course.
