Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A screw gauge has a pitch of and circular divisions. With the faces touching, the zero of the circular scale is above the datum line, and division is on the line. Measuring a wire, the linear scale shows and division is on the datum line.
Least count . Reading linear scale reading (circular division on the datum line) least count. Correct reading observed zero error; when the circular zero is above the datum line with the faces touching, the zero error is negative.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Least count. .
Step 2. Zero error. The zero is divisions short of the line, so the gauge reads too little: zero error .
Step 3. Observed. .
Step 4. Correct. .
Answer: (a) . (b) . (c) .
Watch out. Reading the zero error as (division as it stands) is the usual slip. Count how far the zero is from the line.
