Remainder theorem: dividing $p(x)$ by $x - a$ leaves the remainder $p(a)$ . For $ax - b$ , use $p\left(\dfrac{b}{a}\right)$ . Factor theorem: $x - a$ is a factor exactly when $p(a) = 0$ .
