Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

Write sum_to(n) that adds 1+2+⋯+n1 + 2 + \cdots + n1+2+⋯+n by recursion. What are sum_to(5) and sum_to(100)?

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, compare your working with the solution.

Base case. sum_to(0) is 0.

Recursive case. sum_to(n) is n + sum_to(n - 1).

  • sum_to(5) = 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15.
  • sum_to(100) = 5050. (Check: 100×1012=5050\frac{100 \times 101}{2} = 50502100×101=5050. ✓)
