Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A plant needs three jobs done.
For each job, name the simple tissue that suits it, and give one reason from its cells.
Parenchyma: living, thin cellulose wall, photosynthesis and storage (chlorenchyma, aerenchyma). Collenchyma: living, corners thickened with cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin, flexible support. Sclerenchyma: dead, thick lignified wall, fibres and sclereids, hard support.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Collenchyma. Its cells are living and its wall is not lignified, so it can stretch as the shoot grows.
Step 2. (b) Sclerenchyma, as sclereids. Its walls are thick and full of lignin, so the shell is hard.
Step 3. (c) Parenchyma, as chlorenchyma. Its thin-walled, living cells hold chloroplasts and make food.
Answer: (a) collenchyma; (b) sclerenchyma; (c) parenchyma (chlorenchyma).
