Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A pendulum long hangs in a lift. Find its period (a) when the lift is at rest, (b) when the lift speeds up while going up, at , and (c) when it speeds up while going down, at . (d) What happens if the cable breaks and the lift falls freely?
A simple pendulum of length , for small angles:
In a lift or a car, use the gravity the bob feels, : in a lift speeding up upwards, speeding up downwards.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
(a) At rest. .
(b) Speeding up upwards. , so .
(c) Speeding up downwards. , so .
(d) Free fall. . Nothing pulls the bob back, so the pendulum does not swing. It stays wherever it is, relative to the lift.
Watch out. A lift moving at a steady speed, up or down, changes nothing.
