Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A peg stands on a turntable, from its centre. The turntable makes one turn in . Seen from the side, the peg moves to and fro in SHM. It starts at one end of its path. How long does it take to reach half way to the centre, and how long from there to the centre?
In simple harmonic motion : is the amplitude, the phase, the phase constant, and . It is the projection, on a diameter, of a point moving round a circle of radius at the steady angular speed .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. To . , so . That is a sixth of a turn: .
Step 2. To the centre. , so . That is a quarter of a turn: .
Step 3. The second half. .
Answer: for the first half of the way, and for the second half. The peg is slow near the end and fast near the centre. The size of the turntable does not change these times.
