Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
of a mixture of methanol (boiling point ) and water () is distilled. The thermometer stays near while the first distils, and then it rises to .
Distillation separates liquids that mix by their boiling points: the one with the lower boiling point boils off first and is condensed. Simple distillation needs boiling points more than about apart; closer than that needs fractional distillation. Air is about nitrogen, oxygen and other gases by volume.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Methanol, the liquid with the lower boiling point. While it is boiling off, the thermometer stays at its boiling point.
Step 2. (b) came over at , out of : .
Answer: (a) Methanol. (b) About methanol.
Why it rises. When the methanol is gone, only water is left, and the thermometer climbs to the boiling point of water.
