Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A mixture has sand, salt and water. Describe how to get the sand, the salt and the water as three separate things. Name the method used in each step.
A separation uses a difference in a property. Filtration: a solid that does not dissolve. Evaporation: a dissolved solid. Separating funnel: liquids that do not mix. Centrifuge: tiny particles. Sublimation: a solid that sublimes. A magnet: iron.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Filtration. Pour the mixture through filter paper. The sand stays on the paper; the salty water passes through as the filtrate.
Step 2. Distillation. Heat the filtrate in a flask with a condenser. The water boils off, condenses, and is collected as pure water.
Step 3. What is left. The salt stays behind in the flask.
Answer: Filter out the sand, then distil the filtrate to collect the water and leave the salt.
