Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A metal ball of radius cm sits at the centre of a hollow metal shell of inner radius cm. The space between them is air. The ball is joined to the positive terminal and the shell to the negative terminal of a V supply. Find the capacitance, the charge on the ball, and the field at the surface of the ball.
. Two plates give and . A ball and a shell give . A film of dielectric constant that fills the gap gives . Air breaks down at about V/m.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The capacitance. , that is pF.
Step 2. The charge. , that is nC.
Step 3. The field at the ball. Between the ball and the shell the field is that of the ball alone. At its surface , that is kV/m.
Answer: pF, nC and kV/m.
Check. Another way: V/m. It fits.
