Sana puts a water plant in a beaker and a lamp beside it. She counts the oxygen bubbles for minutes at each distance.
| Distance of the lamp | Bubbles in 5 minutes |

- Find the rate in bubbles per minute at and at .
- What does the table show about light and photosynthesis?
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Photosynthesis: carbon dioxide and water, with sunlight and chlorophyll, give glucose and oxygen; the glucose is stored as starch. Carbon dioxide enters through stomata, most of them on the lower surface of the leaf. Iodine turns starch blue-black.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. At 10 cm. bubbles per minute.
Step 2. At 40 cm. bubbles per minute.
Step 3. The pattern. The farther the lamp, the fewer the bubbles. Less light reaches the plant, so it makes oxygen more slowly.
Answer: and bubbles per minute; more light gives faster photosynthesis.
