Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A health leaflet lists eight vitamins: A, B1, B2, B12, C, D, E and K. Count how many of them are fat-soluble and how many are water-soluble. Then say how many of the eight contain a metal. Finally, name the deficiency disease for the vitamins B1 and C.
Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are stored in the body. Water-soluble vitamins (B group and C) are not, except B12. Vitamin B12 contains cobalt. Vitamin C reacts with iodine in a 1 : 1 ratio: . The mass fraction of an element in a compound is .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Fat-soluble. A, D, E and K: 4 vitamins.
Step 2. Water-soluble. B1, B2, B12 and C: 4 vitamins.
Step 3. Metal. Only vitamin B12 contains a metal, cobalt: 1 vitamin.
Step 4. Diseases. A lack of B1 (thiamine) gives beri-beri. A lack of C (ascorbic acid) gives scurvy.
Answer: 4 fat-soluble, 4 water-soluble and 1 with a metal. Beri-beri for B1 and scurvy for C.
Check. 4 + 4 = 8, which is every vitamin on the list.
