Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A gas goes clockwise round a triangle ABCA on a pressure-volume graph. A is at (, ), B at (, ) and C at (, ). AB is upright, BC a straight line and CA flat. Find the work on each side, the net work and the net heat.
In a cycle the gas returns to its start, so and the net heat equals the net work. The net work is the area of the loop on a pressure-volume graph: positive for a clockwise loop, negative for an anticlockwise one.
Work done by a gas is the area under its path on a pressure-volume graph. At a steady pressure ; along a straight line, the average pressure times ; at a steady temperature . Expanding gives positive work, squeezing negative. .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. AB. The volume does not change: .
Step 2. BC. .
Step 3. CA. .
Step 4. Net. . Over a cycle , so the net heat is also .
Answer: , , ; net work and net heat .
Check. The area of the triangle is .
