A car horn makes Neha jump. For the next minutes her heart beats times a minute instead of . (a) Which gland and hormone caused this? (b) How many extra beats did her heart make? (c) Give two other changes in her body, and how they help.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Endocrine glands release hormones into the blood. The pituitary makes growth hormone, the thyroid makes thyroxin (which needs iodine), the pancreas makes insulin (which lowers blood sugar), and the adrenal glands make adrenaline (which prepares the body for danger). Feedback keeps each level right.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The gland. The adrenal glands released adrenaline into the blood.
Step 2. Extra beats. extra beats.
Step 3. Other changes. More blood goes to the muscles of the arms and legs, and less to the digestive system and the skin. She breathes faster. Both bring more oxygen to the muscles.
Answer: (a) the adrenal glands, adrenaline; (b) extra beats; (c) more blood to the muscles and faster breathing, so her muscles are ready to act.
