Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A farmer in Devon wants a rectangular pen of area against the straight wall of a barn. The wall forms one side, so fence is needed on the other three sides. Fence costs 12 pounds per metre. Find the width of the pen, measured at a right angle to the wall, the length along the wall, and the cost of the cheapest fence.
Write the quantity to be made largest or smallest as a function of one variable, using the condition. Find the domain. Solve , check that the point gives a maximum or minimum with or the end points, and answer with units.

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. One variable. Width , length . The fence is , for .
Step 2. The derivative. gives , so .
Step 3. The check. , so it is a minimum.
Step 4. The length. .
Step 5. The cost. of fence, and pounds.
Answer: wide, along the wall, and the cheapest fence costs pounds.
