Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A culture starts with cells and doubles every minutes. Kiran writes a loop that doubles the count and adds min until the count reaches cells. What time does the loop report? What is the exact moment from the formula? Why do they differ?
Exponential growth: , with doubling time , or , with growth rate . They agree when . In Python: N0 * 2 ** (t / T) and N0 * np.exp(r * t); a loop doubles with N = 2 * N. On a log axis the growth is a straight line.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The loop. is still below a million, and is above. Twelve doublings take min.
Step 2. The formula. , so min.
Step 3. Why they differ. The loop checks the count only at the end of each doubling. The culture really passes a million part way through the twelfth doubling.
Answer: the loop says min; the culture passes a million cells at min.
