Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A concave mirror forms a real image that is times as tall as the object. The image is from the mirror. Find the object distance and the focal length of the mirror.
New Cartesian signs: distances from the pole, against the incoming light negative. So is negative, a concave mirror has a negative , and a convex mirror a positive . Mirror formula ; magnification . A negative means real and inverted.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The signs. (real, in front) and (real, inverted, four times taller).
Step 2. The object. .
Step 3. The focal length. , so .
Answer: the object is in front of the mirror, and the focal length is .
Check. The object is between () and (), where a concave mirror gives a larger real image.
