Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A coil has and H. It is joined to the V (rms), Hz mains. Find the average power it takes. A capacitor is now put in series with it, so that the current is in step with the voltage. Find the capacitance, the new current, the new average power and the rms voltage across the capacitor.
The average power is . The power factor is . The apparent power is in VA.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The coil alone. . . . So A. The power is W.
Step 2. The capacitor. For we need . We want , so .
Step 3. The new current and power. Now . So A and W. This is , the largest power the circuit can take.
Step 4. The capacitor voltage. V.
Answer: W, , A, W and V.
Watch out. The capacitor voltage is almost four times the mains voltage. In real life a factory puts the capacitor in parallel with a motor, so that the motor still gets V. This series arrangement shows the idea, and its danger.
