Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

A circle has centre O and radius 999 cm. A tangent touches the circle at P, and Q is a point on the tangent with PQ=12PQ = 12PQ=12 cm. Find OQOQOQ.

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

Need a reminder? The key ideaShowHide

A tangent meets a circle at exactly one point, and the tangent at P is perpendicular to the radius OP. A line at distance ddd from the centre meets a circle of radius rrr at two points if d<rd < rd<r, at one point if d=rd = rd=r, and at none if d>rd > rd>r. In the right triangle OPT, with the right angle at P, OT2=OP2+PT2OT^2 = OP^2 + PT^2OT2=OP2+PT2. The angles of a triangle add up to 180∘180^\circ180∘.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. The right angle. The tangent is perpendicular to the radius at P, so ∠OPQ=90∘\angle OPQ = 90^\circ∠OPQ=90∘.

Step 2. Pythagoras. OQ2=OP2+PQ2=81+144=225OQ^2 = OP^2 + PQ^2 = 81 + 144 = 225OQ2=OP2+PQ2=81+144=225.

Step 3. The root. OQ=15OQ = 15OQ=15.

Answer: OQ=15OQ = 15OQ=15 cm.
