A laboratory grows Chlorella for a protein supplement. The culture starts with million cells in each mL, and the number doubles every hours.
- How many times does it double in days?
- How many cells are there in each mL after days?
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Algae are simple, thalloid, autotrophic, mostly aquatic plants. Vegetative reproduction is by fragmentation, asexual by zoospores, and sexual by isogamy (equal gametes), anisogamy (unequal gametes, both motile) or oogamy (a large non-motile egg and a small motile male gamete). A population that doubles every hours grows by in hours.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Doublings. doublings.
Step 2. Cells. million cells in each mL.
Answer: doublings; million cells in each mL.
