Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A student wants a real image of a candle flame, times as tall as the flame, on a wall from a concave mirror. Where should the candle be, and what focal length must the mirror have?
New Cartesian signs: distances from the pole, against the incoming light negative. So is negative, a concave mirror has a negative , and a convex mirror a positive . Mirror formula ; magnification . A negative means real and inverted.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The signs. The image is real, so . It is real and enlarged, so .
Step 2. The candle. , so .
Step 3. The focal length. , so .
Answer: the candle is from the mirror, and the focal length is (concave, so is negative).
Check. The candle () is between () and (), and the image is beyond . That is right for a larger real image.
