Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

A brass door handle of 650 g650\ \text{g}650 g is 62 %62\ \%62 % copper and 38 %38\ \%38 % zinc. Find the mass of each metal.

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

An alloy is a mixture of a metal with other elements, melted together. Brass: copper and zinc. Bronze: copper and tin. Solder: lead and tin. Stainless steel: iron, chromium and nickel. Pure gold is 242424 carat; kkk carat gold is k24\dfrac{k}{24}24k gold. Mass of a part = total mass × its percentage ÷ 100100100.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. Copper. 650 g×62100=403 g650\ \text{g} \times \dfrac{62}{100} = 403\ \text{g}650 g×10062=403 g.

Step 2. Zinc. 650 g×38100=247 g650\ \text{g} \times \dfrac{38}{100} = 247\ \text{g}650 g×10038=247 g.

Check. 403 g+247 g=650 g403\ \text{g} + 247\ \text{g} = 650\ \text{g}403 g+247 g=650 g.

Answer: 403 g403\ \text{g}403 g of copper and 247 g247\ \text{g}247 g of zinc.
