A brief note on Waves and Sound . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas v = f λ v = f\lambda v = f λ . The medium sets the speed; the source sets the frequency. On a string, v = T μ v = \sqrt{\dfrac{T}{\mu}} v = μ T . Two waves in step: whole wavelengths of path difference are loud , odd half wavelengths are quiet . Beats: ∣ f 1 − f 2 ∣ |f_1 - f_2| ∣ f 1 − f 2 ∣ each second. Standing waves: a string fixed at both ends or an open pipe gives f n = n v 2 L f_n = \dfrac{nv}{2L} f n = 2 L n v ; a pipe closed at one end gives only odd multiples of v 4 L \dfrac{v}{4L} 4 L v . Doppler: motion towards each other raises the pitch: f ′ = f v ± v o v ∓ v s f' = f\,\dfrac{v \pm v_o}{v \mp v_s} f ′ = f v ∓ v s v ± v o . The facts at a glance Wave speed: v = f λ v = f\lambda v = f λ Beats: ∣ f 1 − f 2 ∣ \lvert f_1 - f_2 \rvert ∣ f 1 − f 2 ∣ each second String, open pipe: f n = n v 2 L f_n = \dfrac{nv}{2L} f n = 2 L n v Closed pipe: v 4 L , 3 v 4 L , 5 v 4 L , … \dfrac{v}{4L}, \dfrac{3v}{4L}, \dfrac{5v}{4L}, \ldots 4 L v , 4 L 3 v , 4 L 5 v , … Resonance tube: λ = 2 ( l 2 − l 1 ) \lambda = 2(l_2 - l_1) λ = 2 ( l 2 − l 1 ) Moving source: f ′ = f v v ∓ v s f' = f\,\dfrac{v}{v \mp v_s} f ′ = f v ∓ v s v A worked example A string 0.75 m 0.75\ \text{m} 0.75 m long has a tension of 81 N 81\ \text{N} 81 N and a mass of 0.01 kg 0.01\ \text{kg} 0.01 kg for each metre. Find the wave speed and its first three harmonics.
The speed. v = 81 N 0.01 kg/m = 90 m/s v = \sqrt{\dfrac{81\ \text{N}}{0.01\ \text{kg/m}}} = 90\ \text{m/s} v = 0.01 kg/m 81 N = 90 m/s . The fundamental. f 1 = 90 m/s 2 × 0.75 m = 60 Hz f_1 = \dfrac{90\ \text{m/s}}{2 \times 0.75\ \text{m}} = 60\ \text{Hz} f 1 = 2 × 0.75 m 90 m/s = 60 Hz . The harmonics. 120 Hz 120\ \text{Hz} 120 Hz and 180 Hz 180\ \text{Hz} 180 Hz . Practice with new numbers

1. Change T to 324. What happens to every harmonic?
Mistakes to avoid Thinking a higher frequency travels faster. It has a shorter wavelength instead. Taking the average frequency as the beats. The beats are the difference. Using v 2 L \dfrac{v}{2L} 2 L v for a closed pipe. It is v 4 L \dfrac{v}{4L} 4 L v , with odd harmonics only. Putting the Doppler signs the wrong way. Towards each other always raises the pitch.
